Overview

The journey to Sahastra Tal lake, often dubbed "the lake of the gods" and part of the renowned seven lake trek, unfolds in the district of Uttarkashi within Uttarakhand, India. This trek is enveloped by awe-inspiring valleys on all sides: the Bhagirathi Valley to the west and the Bhilangana Valley to the east, both of which grace the Indian subcontinent. To the north, the Kush Kalyan Plateau forms a lofty ridge overseeing the lake, flanked by numerous smaller lakes of varying sizes.

Perched atop this hill's highest point lies the majestic Sahastra Tal. The local community holds this lake in profound spiritual regard, culminating in an annual ritual where they carry their deity on their shoulders while circumambulating the sacred waters. Among the local folklore is a tale of a monarch who, after completing a sacred rite at the lake, offered one thousand sahastra flowers to Lord Vishnu. This legend is intricately tied to the lake's significance.

Trekking in Uttarakhand is a must for any avid trekker, and this trek, in particular, treats you to breathtaking vistas of lush green meadows, untamed wildlife, and an array of flora. It also presents the opportunity to behold the grandeur of towering peaks like Jaonli, Srikanth, and other lofty Himalayan ranges. Despite its undeniable allure, this location remains relatively undiscovered, escaping the heavy foot traffic of tourists and hikers.

Itinerary

Day 01: From Dehradun to Bhatwari drive

Our inaugural day will commence with a road journey, chauffeured from the bustling city of Haridwar to the serene hamlet of Bhatwari, nestled at an elevation of 5000 feet. Our route spans a total of 220 kilometers, and we anticipate a journey time of approximately 10 hours to reach our destination. Along the way, our path will guide us through the picturesque towns of Rishikesh, Chamba, and Dharasu before we arrive at our desired location. It's noteworthy that Bhatwari also functions as the administrative hub of the district tehsil.

Our northbound trajectory will follow the course of the Bhagirathi Canal. Upon arrival at our destination, we will settle into a cozy lodge, marking our resting place for the night, where we'll unwind and spend the evening in comfort.

Day 02: Trek from Bhatwari to Gairi

Our journey along the path from Uttarkashi to Gangotri commences with a gentle descent lasting roughly half an hour, leading us from Bhatwari to the charming hamlet of Malla. This quaint settlement, known as Malla, is nestled on both the left and right banks of the Bhagirathi River. Upon crossing the bridge spanning this river, we'll find ourselves in Silla, the ultimate village on our route.

Once we pass through the village, our upward journey continues, guided by a trail that winds its way through a lush, evergreen mountain forest. After a trek lasting approximately four to five hours, we'll arrive at Gairi, a crucial point beyond Silla. Gairi is the sole location past Silla where water is accessible, making it a vital cow pasture for local farmers during the monsoon and summer seasons. It is here that we will make camp for the night.

Day 03: From Gairi to Kush Kalyan Trek

Our journey begins with an hour-long ascent through a lush forest, eventually leading us to a clearing adorned with rustic hut-like structures. From this vantage point, we're treated to a breathtaking panoramic view of the northern region. Upon passing through this picturesque opening, we'll venture into a dense oak forest, where the terrain becomes more challenging.

Over the next three hours, we'll steadily ascend, making our way toward the Chuli La pass. Crossing this mountain pass marks a significant milestone in our trek, but the path ahead remains arduous as we descend into sprawling meadows. It's crucial to bear in mind that after reaching the Kush Kalyan Plateau, a considerable stretch awaits with no water source.

Our campsite is strategically situated near the imposing Kush Kalyan mountain. The total distance covered on this day's hike spans 12 kilometers, a journey that can typically be completed in less than six hours.

Day 04: From Kush Kalyan Trek to Kyarki bugyal

On our fourth day of hiking, our ascent to higher altitudes unveils a transformation in the landscape. The dense tree cover gradually recedes, revealing expansive meadows that stretch as far as the eye can see. We'll enjoy a brief descent before commencing our climb towards Bhowani Bugyal, which lies just a little over an hour's journey from our ultimate destination.

Upon conquering the pass, our path leads us downhill, bringing us to our designated camping area. Over the course of approximately 6-7 hours, we'll cover a distance of roughly 12 kilometers. We'll then retire for the night, seeking well-deserved rest in preparation for the upcoming morning's adventures.

Day 05: From Kyarki Bugyal to Lamb Tal Trekking

Our journey today is relatively short, with our destination being a path situated above the Kyarki campground. This location typically witnesses the onset of snowfall around June. However, during the monsoon season, it transforms into a vibrant carpet of flowers, notably the Brahma kamal and Fen kamal.

As we traverse beyond this mountain, we encounter another ridge. Initially, this ridge presents us with a series of winding bends, but it gradually widens into a path famously known as "chhe Phuti Road," which literally translates to the "six-foot-wide path." This historic route was constructed during the British colonial era.

As we continue along this path, we'll come across several smaller and medium-sized lakes, such as Kokuli Tal and Lamb Tal, which begin to appear over time. Covering the approximately six-kilometer distance typically takes around four to five hours. Now that we've reached our destination, it's time to unwind and savor the surroundings.

Day 06: From Lamb Tal trek to Sahastra Tal and return

Today, our adventure calls for an ambitious ascent of Sahastra Tal, a trek that is rated somewhat challenging. We'll kick things off by navigating a zigzagging path that gradually leads us upward to the crest. The initial stages of our ascent will be relatively straightforward, but as we continue, the terrain becomes progressively more demanding, especially in the fall when the presence of snow adds an extra layer of challenge and time to our hike.

The prominent mountain guiding our way is known as Kokuli Dhar, and the panoramic vista from its summit is nothing short of stunning. The ascent to the ridge typically takes no more than an hour. From this vantage point, we anticipate catching sight of the Sahastra peak, although the view might be obscured if cloud cover envelops the summit.

Departing from this location, our next destination is Dhoni Tal, a moderately sized pool. Subsequently, we embark on a steep ascent leading us to Sahastra Tal, a spacious lake renowned for its crystal-clear waters. After a couple of hours exploring its surroundings, we'll begin our return journey to our respective camps. This day's trek covers a total distance of 12 kilometers, a rewarding but time-consuming adventure that may occupy 7-8 hours of our day.

Day 07: From Lamb Tal to Kush Kalyan Trekking via Kyari Bugyal

We anticipate a journey lasting approximately 7-8 hours, spanning a total distance of 28 kilometers. Our route will lead us from Kyari Bugyal down to Kyari Khal, and from there, we will press onward towards our ultimate destination, Kush Kalyan.

Day 08: From Kush Kalyan to Pinswar trek and drive to Ghansali

Our descent begins by traversing through lush, verdant meadows, eventually leading us into the dense evergreen forests. Along our hiking route, we'll pass through the charming settlement of Pinswar. This leg of the journey spans approximately 10 kilometers and will require roughly 5 to 6 hours of hiking to reach the point where our vehicle can transport us to Ghansali.

The subsequent drive to Ghansali, which typically takes between three to four hours, might be marked by the region's notorious traffic congestion due to its lower elevation. Our plan is to arrive in the evening, and upon reaching Ghansali, we'll make our way to our lodging for the night.

Day 09: From Ghansali to Dehradun drive

Let's turn our focus to Dehradun, the city where our journey began. Our upcoming leg of the trip is estimated to span approximately 7-8 hours, covering a distance of approximately 240 kilometers.
